Black Mountain Movers

An Asheville crew covering Black Mountain and the rest of Western NC.

Moving in Black Mountain, NC

Black Mountain is the first real town east of Asheville on I-40, about 15 miles out where the Swannanoa Valley starts to climb toward the Eastern Continental Divide. The walkable little downtown, the Lake Tomahawk area, and the cluster of retreat centers and summer camps give the place its own rhythm — and the nearby village of Montreat sits just up the road in its cove. We run this valley constantly, so the grade off Exit 64 and the narrow drives along the creek are familiar ground for our crew.

How we work the Swannanoa Valley

Plenty of our Black Mountain jobs are people moving up from Swannanoa or in from Asheville for the quieter pace, plus the seasonal turnover around the conference centers. Our movers are W-2 employees in Rest Easy uniforms, driving our own trucks — Wesley built the company in 2015 specifically so folks here would stop rolling the dice on no-show outfits. Our crew loads the truck, drives it, and unloads it.

The local rate is $139/hr for two movers and a truck with all the pads, dollies, and tools included; a three-person crew runs $195/hr when the house is big or the stairs are steep. A 1-bedroom typically lands in the $610–$910 band, a 3-bedroom house $1,740–$2,560, and we put it in writing before the job, as North Carolina requires that estimate up front, and we would do it anyway. A $150 deposit locks the date.

Winter is the real variable out here: ice forms on the I-40 overpasses and the shaded valley curves before it does in town, so we watch the forecast and adjust the start time rather than send a loaded truck onto a glazed grade. For anything crossing state lines (east to Asheville is local, but a haul to Knoxville is not) we hold NCUC authority plus US DOT/MC. Tell us the address and the inventory and we will give you a number that holds.

What's Covered

  • A two-mover crew and a loaded truck at $139/hr, blankets and dollies and tools already figured into the rate
  • A binding written estimate handed over before the Swannanoa Valley move begins, as state law requires
  • Padding and stretch-wrap on furniture and glass so nothing shifts on the I-40 climb out of Black Mountain
  • Beds, shelving, and oversized pieces broken down and rebuilt at the new place by the same crew
  • Labor-only loading or unloading at $139/hr when you have your own truck or a POD on the drive
  • Cargo coverage up to $1,000,000 per shipment, with optional full-value protection above the standard $0.60/lb

Black Mountain Reviews

“We bought a place in Haw Creek with a steep, winding driveway that scared off the first company we called. Rest Easy came out, looked at it, brought a smaller truck for the shuttle, and never once acted like it was a problem. The two leads were Buncombe County guys who knew exactly how to handle the grade. Everything arrived intact, including a marble-top dresser I fully expected to crack. They reassembled the beds and even put the felt pads back under the dining chairs. The estimate held to the dollar.”

“Relocated from Fletcher to Charlotte for work. I-40 east the whole way. Binding quote, same two movers on both ends, delivered next morning right on schedule. No headaches.”

“Downsizing my parents out of their big Beaverdam house into assisted living was the hardest move I have ever organized. The crew was gentle with my dad, who kept changing his mind about what to keep, and never made him feel rushed. They donated a load to the place I asked instead of just hauling it off, took apart the old hospital bed carefully, and labeled the boxes by room so unpacking at the new place was manageable. They are licensed and insured, which mattered to me because the facility asked, and they had all the paperwork ready. I cannot recommend them enough for an older parent's move.”

FAQ

Is Black Mountain inside your normal coverage, or is it a special trip?
It is part of our regular run. We are 15 miles east on I-40 and work the Swannanoa Valley weekly, so there is no out-of-area charge — you get the same hourly rate and deposit as a job inside Asheville.
Can you also reach Montreat and the camps just past town?
Yes. Montreat is a few minutes up the cove from downtown Black Mountain and well within our area, and we handle the seasonal moves around the conference and retreat centers too. The narrow approach roads are exactly why we scout the truck size first.
What happens if there's ice on the I-40 grade on move day?
We watch the overpasses and the shaded valley curves, which freeze before the roads in town. If the morning is genuinely unsafe we shift the start time and tell you early — we are not putting a loaded truck on a glazed grade to hit a clock.
