Piano, Safe & Heavy-Item Moving

Piano and Specialty Moving in Asheville

A piano is not just heavy. It’s heavy and awkward and expensive, and the wrong move can crack a soundboard or scratch a finish that’s irreplaceable. Asheville’s music scene means there are a lot of them around, from spinets in West Asheville bungalows to baby grands in the older homes up around Grove Park. Rest Easy Moving moves pianos and other specialty pieces with our own trained crew, the right dollies, and a plan for the stairs and steep approaches that make this town tricky. Specialty moves start at $365.

The pieces that need their own approach

Beyond pianos, we handle the things a standard crew shouldn’t just grab: gun safes, slate pool tables, antique armoires, oversized art, and the heavy pottery and sculpture that fill so many homes here. Each gets the right equipment: piano boards and skid plates, stair-climbing dollies, and enough hands to keep control on a turning staircase or a sloped driveway. The mountain factor is real — a piano that rolls fine on level ground needs a careful, braced descent on a steep WNC drive, and our crew plans the path before anything moves.

  • Upright and grand piano moves with proper piano boards, padding, and skid protection
  • Stair-climbing and braced handling for the turning staircases common in older Asheville homes
  • Gun safes, slate pool tables, and antique armoires moved with the right dollies and crew size
  • Steep-driveway descent planning so a heavy piece never gets away from the crew

The mountain approaches are where a specialty piece earns its own crew. A hillside home up around Beaverdam or Kimberly might have a switchback driveway that drops away on one side, and a piano on a slope like that has to be eased down with hands and braking, not muscled. We walk the path first, decide where the truck parks for the shortest safe carry, and stage enough movers to keep full control the whole way.

For a grand, we can crate or partially break it down as the instrument requires, and we move it without the dragging or jolting that would knock it out of tune more than the move itself does. A written estimate comes first, NC-required, and a $150 deposit holds the date. Standard coverage is $0.60 a pound, with full-value protection well worth it on an instrument. What Asheville Customers Say Once It’s Done

★★★★★

“Downsizing my parents out of their big Beaverdam house into assisted living was the hardest move I have ever organized. The crew was gentle with my dad, who kept changing his mind about what to keep, and never made him feel rushed. They donated a load to the place I asked instead of just hauling it off, took apart the old hospital bed carefully, and labeled the boxes by room so unpacking at the new place was manageable. They are licensed and insured, which mattered to me because the facility asked, and they had all the paperwork ready. I cannot recommend them enough for an older parent's move.”

“Cold December morning, ice on the I-240 overpass, and the crew still showed up on time having clearly left early to account for it. Smart and careful drivers. Move went fine.”

“Out in Mills River our road is one of those narrow switchbacks with no shoulder, and you can't just send any truck up it. Rest Easy scouted it on the phone first, asked good questions about clearance and the turnaround, and brought the right size rig. The two movers were professional, wrapped the appliances, and got the upright freezer down the back steps without scratching the deck. Final bill matched the written estimate and the deposit came off the top. This is the third time I have used them across two different houses and they have never let me down.”

Service FAQ

I've got a baby grand and a steep driveway up in Grove Park. Is that going to be a problem?
It's manageable with the right crew and plan. The steep WNC drives are exactly why we scout the path and use enough movers to brace a controlled descent. A baby grand on a slope needs hands and equipment, not muscle alone, and that's what we bring.
Does moving a piano knock it out of tune?
Any move shifts a piano slightly, so a tuning after it settles in the new room is normal — give it a couple of weeks. What we prevent is the rough handling that does real damage, like dropping or dragging it down stairs. The instrument itself stays protected.
Can you move a gun safe or a slate pool table too, or just pianos?
Both, along with antique armoires and heavy art. Those pieces need the same specialty approach: the right dollies, the right crew size, and a planned path. A slate table comes apart in sections, and a safe needs proper rigging, which a standard crew shouldn't improvise.
Why does a piano cost more than just adding it to my regular move?
Because it needs dedicated equipment and trained handling, not just an extra body. The $365 starting rate covers the piano boards, the protection, and the crew time to do it safely. Treating a piano like a dresser is how soundboards crack and finishes get ruined.
