Senior & Right-Size Downsizing

Senior and Downsizing Moves in Asheville

Asheville draws a lot of retirees. The milder mountain summers, the walkable downtown, and the slower pace all pull people here for their later years. And sooner or later many of them move again, out of a longtime house and into something smaller, a retirement community in Arden, or closer to family. Rest Easy Moving handles senior moves with patience and our own steady crew, because this kind of move is rarely just about furniture. Wesley built the company in 2015 around the idea that move day shouldn’t be a source of stress for anyone, and that’s especially true for an older client letting go of a family home.

A slower, more careful kind of move

Downsizing means decisions, and we don’t rush them. Our crew works at the pace the day needs, helps figure out what fits in the new, smaller space, and handles the heirlooms, the china, the clock, the dresser that’s been in the family for generations, with the care they’re owed. For many seniors the move is from a multi-story house in North Asheville or Kenilworth into a single-level place, and we manage the stairs and the heavy pieces so nobody’s lifting who shouldn’t be.

  • An unhurried pace with a crew that adapts to the day rather than racing the clock
  • Help deciding what fits the new, smaller floor plan before the truck is loaded
  • Extra-careful handling of heirlooms, china, and longtime family furniture
  • Coordination with retirement communities in Arden and Fletcher, including their move-in rules and elevator windows

Communication tends to matter more on these moves, because often it’s an adult child handling the arrangements from out of town while a parent is still in the house. We’re happy to walk the family through the plan ahead of time, confirm the timeline, and keep everyone in the loop on move day, so nobody is guessing about when the truck arrives or how long the day will run.

We can pair this with packing and short-term storage so the timeline flexes around a closing or a family’s schedule. A written estimate comes first, NC-required, and a $150 deposit holds the date and applies to your total. Standard coverage is $0.60 a pound, with full-value protection optional on the pieces that matter most. Call (888) 711-4778 and we’ll handle the rest.

What Asheville Customers Say Once It’s Done

★★★★★

“Our Five Points street is a one-way with cars parked tight on both sides, and I genuinely did not know how a truck would even fit. The crew threw out cones, talked to the neighbor about moving one car, and made it work without a single scratch on anything. They padded the doorframes on both ends. Final cost landed right inside the 2-bedroom flat-rate band they gave me when I booked. No upselling, no padding the hours.”

“Hired them just for loading labor into my own rental truck, $139/hr, no equipment minimum which I appreciated. Two guys packed that 26-footer like a puzzle and nothing shifted on my drive to Tennessee. One small scuff on a dresser corner, which the lead pointed out himself before I even noticed. Honest about it. Solid crew.”

“We have an upright that came down from my grandmother and it sat in our Grove Park house for years because no one would touch it. Rest Easy quoted the specialty rate starting at $365, sent guys with the proper straps and a piano dolly, and walked it down the front steps and into the new place without a thud. They were honest that the curve in our hallway would be the tricky part, and they were right, but they took their time and got it through. It plays the same as it did, no new buzz or rattle. I will use them for the whole-house move next spring.”

Service FAQ

My mother is moving out of her North Asheville home of forty years. Will your crew be patient with her?
Yes. These moves carry a lot of emotion, and we don't rush them. The crew works at the pace the day needs, gives her time with the decisions, and treats the house and her belongings with respect. That patience is the whole reason families call us for this.
We can't take everything to the smaller place. Can you help us figure out what fits?
We do this often. Before the truck loads, the crew can help you sort what realistically fits the new floor plan, so you're not hauling a houseful into a one-bedroom. We can also store the rest short-term while the family decides what to do with it.
The retirement community in Arden has its own move-in rules. Do you handle that?
We coordinate with the community ahead of time on their move-in windows, elevator reservations, and any access rules. Those places often restrict move hours, so lining it up in advance keeps the day smooth and avoids the crew waiting on a locked dock.
Some of these pieces are family heirlooms. How do you protect them?
The heirlooms get the careful treatment: padded, wrapped, and hand-carried where it matters, with full-value protection recommended on the irreplaceable items. The china, the clock, the old dresser: those aren't just freight to us, and the crew handles them accordingly.
